How to Make Use of the Council's Tools and Resources
In just four years, the Council has created numerous products to serve the needs of employers, educators and individuals working in the supply chain.
- National Occupational Standards: While the norm for development of an individual occupational standard ranges from three to four years, the Council has written 20 supply chain occupational standards in only two years, using a fast-track, best-practices approach.
- LMI Toolkit: Current and historical labour market information and corresponding tools.
- National Accreditation Program: Recognition of supply chain-related educational and training offerings that meet national standards.
- Career Focus Program: Wage subsidies for new hires in supply chain roles.
- Virtual HR Department: The tools and information required by an employer to attract, retain and develop its workforce.
- Education Compendium: This online database is a fairly comprehensive listing of the supply chain-related educational offerings of post-secondary institutions and associations across Canada.

Feedback Needed on Draft Occupational Standards
The Council now has available draft versions of the first two of thirteen occupational standards to be developed through its Occupational Standards Phase II Project.
Stakeholders are encouraged to review and comment on these standards. Feedback should be sent to Project Manager Dale Ross, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The other eleven standards to be written through this project are for the following occupations. National Occupational Classification codes are included in brackets following each title.

Do You Have the Right People for the Rebound?
Could Interns or Co-op Students Help Ease the Pressure?

The last two years have been difficult for our sector, indeed for any business or organization faced with impacts of the recession. The pressure to lower costs, including those for labour, and a decrease in orders have had a tremendous effect on staffing levels and morale. Our ongoing HR trends analysis indicates that we are emerging from the recession and that business is on the rebound, with an increase in hiring and investments in education and training, but are we truly prepared? Many organizations have put succession planning on hold as the focus has shifted to slim or non-existent margins and a continued emphasis on lowering costs. Now that we are edging out of the worst, what are we doing to build a pool of qualified, competent and reliable people to replace those in our ranks that will leave? Remember that despite the recession, we have all continued to age and, eventually, we will all leave…with luck, at a time of our own choosing.
As the balance of supply and demand for labour begins to tilt, employers will have to think of succession planning. One of the tools in your strategy for succession planning could be the development of partnerships with colleges and universities in your community that offer supply chain-related courses and programs. These learning-system providers (identified in our catalogue or “compendium” of learning-system providers found at www.supplychaincanada.org/en/education-information
) are excellent sources for recent graduates or for more-engaging opportunities through partnerships with co-op programs and internships. Many providers are looking for unique, value-added opportunities for their students. These partnerships provide students with the opportunity to experience the challenge of working in the sector, they provide the institution with a real “learning lab” to link theory to practice, and they provide the employer with candidates that can apply world-class knowledge in your own setting, all within a respectable range for labour costs. As importantly, an internship or co-op placement provides a pre-employment screening opportunity for the employer. Many interns and co-op students develop great relationships with the employers, often resulting in full-time positions upon graduation. Think of the advantage: lower search costs to find the right person, at the right time, with the skill sets that you need, and an understanding of your business! It’s a win-win-win for all.

Both Sides of the Information Interview

Yesterday was my final class with one of the cohorts in Humber College’s Post Graduate Supply Chain certificate program. High on everyone’s mind was, “What now?” and, more specifically, “How do I find a job?” This had been a central topic to the Business Communications curriculum that I was teaching. In a final group presentation, one of the groups threw out the statistic that “80 percent of available jobs are never formally posted.”
Serendipitously, my guest speaker – none other than the Council’s Kevin Maynard – had the answer to the apparent conundrum, “How do you find what nobody displays?” The answer: the information interview.
This is a well-known part of the job-seeking toolkit. Someone who has a job agrees to a job-related talk with someone who is looking for a job (in the specific area), even though there is no formal position to fill. Done successfully, it can turn the speed-dating nature of networking into a more-relaxed exchange akin to a “It’s Just Lunch” meeting that can bring you a solid addition to your eRolodex. I have initiated (and provided) many an informational interview. New to me from Kevin’s perspective were the benefits for the granter of the informational interview. I had always assumed that I was tapping into their interest in giving back, kindness of their heart, or (in rare instances) need to fill the day.
Kevin’s perspective on “what’s in it for the granters” did not ignore some of the motivations above, but added that, with supply chain continuing to mature as an industry, professionals in the sector may be interested in understanding what goes into such formal education programs as Humber’s certificate. He also mentioned that those working in supply chain will be interested in filling the funnel of potential applicants in preparation for business picking up later in the summer and into the fall. The makings for a win-win, I think.
Summer is a great time for gathering information.
If you are looking for work (or better work) in the supply chain sector, this summer may provide some opportunities for information interviews. I hope those from my classes are able to successfully utilize this type of interviews.
If you are working in the sector, and get a call or e-mail from a new grad who is “hoping to ask you some questions about your experiences and learn about the sector,” you may feel some kindness in your heart, but please don’t forget what’s in it for you. This could be the solution to an unposted job later in the year.
