The biggest challenge when sending an employees to training is transferring the skills learned in the training to the workplace. While the trainer can influence the outcomes during the training session, the trainer has little control as to whether the knowledge will be used back on the job. The employee's direct manager or supervisor, on the other hand, can do a number of things before, during and after the training session to make sure that the employee applies the skills acquired during training. The resource guide in the box at right provides a number of tips and action items the manager can implement to influence the transfer of knowledge. This way, both the employee and the larger department will benefit from the employee's development.
