Reward and Recognition

Other VHRD Sections

It is critical that employees can be relied upon to be at work every day in order to meet production, quality and efficiency targets. While addressing absenteeism or lateness/tardiness problems is necessary (see the Addressing Poor Performance tools in the Managing Performance section of this website for assistance in this area), promoting regular attendance is equally important.
As outlined in the introduction of this section, it is important to reinforce positive actions and behaviours through recognizing those employees who perform at desired levels. Through recognizing perfect attendance, organizations promote that being at work every day is important and is something that is viewed as a priority.
Some organizations offer an annual award for perfect attendance. While this structure is worthwhile, an absence early in the year eliminates any positive influence from the program for the duration of the year. Programs with quarterly or even monthly recognition ensure that the value of the program is maintained even after an absence.
