EDUCATION/SECTOR COUNCIL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
Through this program, the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council is partnered with the Toronto District School Board's Lakeshore Collegiate, in Etobicoke, Ont., to introduce supply chain concepts and occupations to secondary-school students. By linking with industry through the sector councils, the TDSB aims to provide real-world information and experiences to youth as they make critical decisions about their future paths. The CSCSC is joined in this partnership by fellow sector council, the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service Council (CARS). Given Lakeshore's location in an industrial area of Toronto, the two sector councils are an appropriate match to help prepare students to join the local labour force.
The school has established an Industry Partnership Network (IPN) that comprises supply chain practitioners who work in facilities near the school. (See member list below.) Working with members of the IPN, teachers and administrators at Lakeshore are exploring opportunities for job-shadowing, mentoring, experiential learning, worksite visits, career fairs and more.
The IPN will carry on the work initiated by the Toronto District School Board and The Alliance of Sector Councils through a three-year pilot project that joined sector councils with specific schools in the TDSB's jurisdiction to improve student engagement in learning. That project officially ended in the spring of 2010.
The partnerships developed through the project were intended to address the needs of the approximately 50 per cent of students in Toronto schools who join the labour force after high school without acquiring further education. An important goal of the project was to create a model for education/sector council partnerships that can be adapted for application anywhere in Canada.
The nine targets of the pilot project were:
- To develop sustainable industry/education partnerships;
- To embed nine HRSDC-identified essential skills in related school programs;
- To create expanded opportunities for experiential learning by students and teachers;
- To initiate courses and programs that are sector- and skills-focused;
- To build students' career awareness;
- To enhance parental awareness of new realities;
- To make use of classroom resources with sector applications, websites and labour market information;
- To develop a protocol for the recognition of skills and the granting of industry-recognized certificates and credentials; and,
- To assist with effective transitions to work or post-secondary learning.
